Hospitalizations often involve one or more medical procedures, ranging from simple vaccinations to complex surgical operations. The primary procedure is the one that is performed for definitive treatment. In this analysis, the CPT codes used were based on the expert opinion of what would be done in an operating room. This dataset contains the number of six procedures selected for hospitalized patients (esophageal resection, pancreatic resection, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (AAA repairs), carotid endarterectomy, coronary artery bypass graft surgery, percutaneous coronary intervention) performed in California hospitals.
The percentage changes in volume, when indicated in the text, are derived from IRRs and not from the absolute number of procedures. Hospitals and surgical centers recovered quickly after the initial closure, indicating that adaptability, resilience, greater knowledge about transmission limitations and financial factors could have influenced the restoration of initial volumes of surgical procedures, even in a context of a substantial increase in the burden of the disease due to COVID-19. In accordance with national recommendations, 35 states received formal statements from state governors or medical societies to postpone all non-essential surgical procedures. This was associated with a decrease in the volume of surgical procedures during the first months of the pandemic's closure. The most common medical procedures performed in California hospitals include esophageal resection, pancreatic resection, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (AAA repairs), carotid endarterectomy, coronary artery bypass graft surgery and percutaneous coronary intervention. These procedures are essential for providing quality healthcare to patients and ensuring their safety. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, California hospitals have been able to maintain their high standards of care by adapting quickly and efficiently to the changing circumstances. The ability of California hospitals to adjust to the new normal has been remarkable.
By taking into account the latest guidelines and recommendations from state governments and medical societies, they have been able to continue providing quality care while ensuring patient safety. This has been possible due to their adaptability, resilience, greater knowledge about transmission limitations and financial factors. The importance of these medical procedures cannot be overstated. They are essential for providing quality healthcare to patients and ensuring their safety. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, California hospitals have been able to maintain their high standards of care by adapting quickly and efficiently to the changing circumstances.
